Nighttime fears typically peak at 4 and begin to reduce at 5, but some children — particularly highly imaginative ones or those exposed to age-inappropriate media content — continue to experience them. The approach remains the same: a dim nightlight, a consistent warm farewell, a comfort object. At 5, also help the child develop their own "brave thought" — a specific comforting statement they rehearse during the day and deploy at night. This is more empowering than a parent-provided ritual. Occasional light snoring, particularly during illness or when the child sleeps on their back, is common and not concerning. Loud, frequent snoring (most nights), mouth breathing during sleep, or any pauses in breathing during sleep warrant speaking with your GP or paediatrician. These can indicate enlarged adenoids or tonsils, or obstructive sleep apnoea — both of which are treatable and significantly affect sleep quality. A child with untreated obstructive sleep apnoea may be getting 10+ hours in bed but poor-quality sleep — producing similar symptoms to insufficient sleep.

Within 30 minutes of the school week wake time — yes. The wake time anchors the circadian rhythm; the bedtime follows from it. A child who wakes at 6:30 AM Monday–Friday and sleeps until 8:30 AM on weekends has shifted their circadian timing by 2 hours — making Monday morning feel like jet lag recovery. Bedtimes can be 30–45 minutes later on weekends; wake times should not vary by more than 30 minutes. This protects Monday without sacrificing a reasonable weekend lie-in.


What to Expect at 6 Years and Beyond

The sleep picture continues to simplify structurally as your child moves through the school years, but new pressures arrive from homework, extracurricular activities, and later social peer norms:

  • Sleep need decreases slightly — toward 9–12 hours for children aged 6–9; this is a gradual decline, not a step-change
  • Nighttime fears continue to reduce for most children after age 5–6 as executive function allows more reliable reality-testing
  • Screen access increases — tablets, gaming, social media all become more present; the 60-minute pre-bed screen cutoff becomes harder to hold and more important to maintain
  • Homework and after-school activities can push evening schedules later; protecting the bedtime against a lengthening evening is an active management task
  • The school performance link grows stronger — research consistently shows that school-age children who maintain adequate sleep through primary school show better academic outcomes, social functioning, and mental health indicators than those who do not
  • Adolescence brings biological sleep changes (circadian phase delay) from around age 12–13 — the later natural sleep timing of teenagers is biological, not behavioural; that shift is still years away at 5
