Why the Categories Matter — Honey Is Not Grapes
The foods on every baby avoid-list belong to three fundamentally different risk categories. Understanding the category tells you what to do at the edges — when the food is prepared differently, appears in a recipe, or comes from an "organic" or "natural" source.
Category 1 — Choking hazards
Physical mechanical risks based on size, shape,
or texture. The food can physically block the infant
airway. The risk is preparation-solvable: the correct
cut, cook, or grind makes the food safe.
Examples: whole grapes; whole cherry tomatoes;
whole nuts; raw hard carrot; popcorn; large blobs
of nut butter.
Category 2 — Biological & toxicological hazards
Foods that present a specific biological risk
the immature infant body cannot manage — not a
preparation problem. No preparation method
removes the underlying risk.
Examples: honey (botulism spores);
salt (kidney immaturity); rice drinks (arsenic);
high-mercury fish; unpasteurised dairy; raw non-BL eggs.
Category 3 — Developmental inappropriateness
Foods that are not toxic and not a choking hazard
but are nutritionally wrong for this developmental
stage — displacing appropriate nutrition, damaging
developing teeth, or providing inadequate fat for
brain development.
Examples: cow's milk as main drink;
fruit juice; low-fat dairy; added sugar; sweetened drinks.
Category 1 — Choking Hazards (Preparation-Solvable)
Choking hazards in infancy are foods whose size, shape, or texture allows them to partially or fully block the infant airway. The infant airway is narrow — approximately 10–15mm in diameter — which is why foods that are safe for adults (a whole grape is harmless to eat at any age past toddlerhood) are genuinely dangerous for babies and young children.
The critical point about this category: the risk is in the form, not the food. Correct preparation removes the risk. This means the food is not forbidden — it requires preparation that makes it safe.

Honey — Infant Botulism

The hidden salt sources that most commonly push infant sodium intake above safe levels are not table salt added at cooking — they are the processed ingredients used in baby meals:
- Bread: most sliced bread contains 0.4–0.6g salt per slice; one slice already approaches the daily infant maximum — use unsalted or very-low-salt bread, or make bread without salt
- Cheese: cheddar contains approximately 1.7g salt per 100g; use sparingly and in small amounts; cream cheese (typically lower salt) is a better everyday choice

What Seems Harmless But Isn't — Where Parent Intuition Fails Most Often
These are the foods most commonly misjudged — either because a "natural" or "organic" label creates a false sense of safety, or because the risk is not visible or widely discussed.
Organic, raw, or local honey
The intuition: "organic honey is natural and unprocessed — surely it's purer and safer." The reality: the botulism spore risk in honey is a function of environmental exposure during honey production — spores occur naturally in soil and raw agricultural environments. Organic certification addresses farming practices; it does not guarantee spore absence. Raw honey (unheated, unfiltered) arguably carries a higher spore risk than processed honey because fewer manufacturing steps have occurred. Manuka honey, local honey, fresh-from-the-hive honey — the infant botulism risk is identical across all types. No honey before 12 months, regardless of source or processing method.
Tea (regular, herbal, decaf)
Regular tea (black, green, white) contains tannins — polyphenols that bind non-haem iron (the plant-based iron in lentils, spinach, fortified cereal) and inhibit its absorption by up to 60%. This is particularly significant at 6 months, when iron is already a nutritional priority and the baby's gestational iron stores are depleting. "Just a sip" of tea at a mealtime can meaningfully reduce iron absorption from that meal. Herbal teas are not tested for infant safety — chamomile contains compounds that can cause allergic reactions; fennel tea contains anethole, which in large quantities affects oestrogen pathways. Decaffeinated tea contains residual caffeine and full tannin content. No tea in any form at any stage of infancy.
Freshly squeezed fruit juice
The intuition: fresh-squeezed orange juice is natural, contains vitamin C, and is different from packaged juice. The dental reality: the citric acid in freshly squeezed juice is identical to that in packaged juice — the acid content is what erodes enamel, and that is a function of the fruit, not the processing. A freshly squeezed orange has the same pH as commercial orange juice. Vitamin C from freshly squeezed juice is nutritionally equivalent to vitamin C from eating the orange itself — the orange also provides fibre, takes longer to consume (reducing acid contact time with teeth), and does not displace appropriate drinks. Offer the orange, not the juice.
Branded baby snacks — rusks, puffs, biscuits
"Baby" labelling creates an expectation of nutritional appropriateness that is not always warranted. UK rusks have historically contained significant added sugar — the formulations have improved in recent years but labels should still be checked individually. Baby biscuits, "melt" snacks, and puff products vary widely in sugar and salt content; some are appropriate, some are not. The rule: always read the label on any baby-marketed food, regardless of the packaging. Look at sugar per 100g (aim for under 5g total sugars per 100g) and sodium per 100g (aim for under 100mg sodium per 100g for a snack product). "Suitable from 6 months" on the packaging indicates age-based safety for choking, not nutritional superiority.
Whole blueberries at 6 months
Blueberries are widely recommended as an excellent baby food — they are nutritious and appropriate from 6 months, but they should not be offered whole at 6–8 months. A blueberry is small and round: while smaller than a grape, it can still lodge in the infant airway and a whole blueberry cannot be effectively gummed by a 6-month-old. The correct preparation at 6 months: halve or quarter blueberries. By 9–10 months as the baby develops better oral control and bite, whole blueberries become appropriate — they squash easily between gums and do not have the rigid sphere problem of grapes. The nutrient content does not depend on whether the blueberry is whole or halved.
Low-sodium soy sauce and miso
"Low-sodium" soy sauce still contains approximately 600mg sodium per teaspoon — more than the entire daily sodium allowance for a baby under 12 months (400mg). The word "low" is relative to regular soy sauce (approximately 900mg per teaspoon), not relative to infant nutritional needs. A single teaspoon of any soy sauce in a baby's meal portion dramatically exceeds the daily limit. Miso paste is similarly high in sodium regardless of type. Neither is appropriate in infant food. Use salt-free alternatives for umami flavour: tomato puree; nutritional yeast in small amounts; lemon juice; unsalted vegetable stock; herbs and mild spices.
A Practical Fish Guide for Babies
Fish is one of the most nutritious first foods — high in protein, omega-3 fatty acids (important for brain development), iodine, and iron. The restrictions on fish are narrow and specific. Most fish is safe and beneficial.

The citric and malic acids that erode tooth enamel are present in the fruit, not added during processing. Fresh-squeezed orange juice has the same pH as commercial orange juice. Vitamin C from juice is nutritionally equivalent to vitamin C from eating the fruit — the fruit also provides fibre and takes longer to consume (reducing acid contact time with teeth). Offer whole fruit, not juice, at all stages of infancy.
No — herbal teas are not recommended for babies. They are not tested for infant safety, are not regulated as medicines or foods for infants, and some contain bioactive compounds that are not appropriate at this age (chamomile can cause allergic reactions; fennel contains anethole which in large quantities affects hormone pathways). Regular tea — including decaffeinated — contains tannins that significantly inhibit iron absorption. Water and age-appropriate milk are the only appropriate drinks in infancy.
Rice absorbs inorganic arsenic from soil more than other grains, and rice drinks concentrate this arsenic further. The FSA recommends rice drinks are not given to children under 5 years due to this arsenic concentration. Rice as a food (baby rice cereal, rice in meals) is fine in normal quantities — the restriction applies specifically to rice-based plant milks.
