Part 16 — Special Diets and Circumstances

Vegetarian and Vegan Feeding

A well-planned vegetarian diet can meet a growing child's needs at every stage in this guide. A vegan diet can as well, but requires more deliberate planning — particularly around vitamin B12 (found only in animal products or fortified foods), iron, zinc, protein variety, and often vitamin D, and the AAP recommends involving a pediatrician or pediatric dietitian in planning a vegan diet for an infant or toddler specifically, given the higher stakes of getting it wrong during the fastest-growth years of life.

Children learn food acceptance partly by watching trusted adults eat and enjoy a food, which is part of why family meals — even simple, imperfect ones — do genuine nutritional and behavioural work beyond the food itself.


Part 17 — A Closer Look at Micronutrients

Iron

Iron is the micronutrient most consistently flagged across feeding guidance, because a baby's birth iron stores deplete right around the time solids begin, and iron deficiency in infancy has been linked to effects on cognitive development if left unaddressed. Feeding a Second (or Third) Child

Feeding logistics change substantially with more than one child at the table, and it's worth naming a few honest patterns rather than pretending the second time around looks identical to the first. A second baby's introduction to solids often happens in a noisier, less controlled environment — an older sibling's meal happening alongside it, less opportunity to prepare a single-ingredient puree from scratch for every new food — and this is completely fine. There's no evidence that a less curated, more family-meal-centered start to solids produces worse outcomes than a highly controlled one; if anything, earlier exposure to a wider variety of table foods (in appropriately modified, choking-safe forms) is broadly consistent with WHO's complementary feeding principles.

Picky eating and food refusal are also frequently viewed differently the second time around — parents who White-knuckled through an older child's picky phase often approach a younger child's food refusal with considerably more calm, having learned firsthand that the phase passes. This isn't lowered standards; it's earned perspective, and it tends to reduce mealtime tension for the whole family.
